Assessing the performance of the urban sanitation market
A healthy sanitation market is key to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6.2. This ambitious target calls for adequate and equitable sanitation for all by 2030. Existing processes to design and prioritize sanitation interventions often have a limited focus on issues of equity, sustainability and safety. Athena Infonomics, in collaboration with Aguaconsult, ESAWAS and Speak up Africa, is supporting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a comprehensive city wide sanitation investment planning tool. The ‘City Wide Inclusive Sanitation Service Assessment and Planning Tool’ seeks to help city authorities make better informed sanitation investments. The tool incorporates interactive illustrations drawn from city/urban data showcasing how equitable, safe and financially sustainable planned sanitation investments are. It considers the role of both public and private sector agencies, comparing different possible future scenarios.
