Prof. Arvind Pandey is an advisor at Athena. He holds a Ph.D. in statistics, BHU and postdoc in biostatistics and population studies from UNC at Chapel Hill, USA which he completed under the Rockefeller Foundation fellowship. He is a veteran in the field of population science, statistical modelling and epidemiological studies on communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Prof. Pandey served as the director at the National Institute of Medical Statistics, New Delhi (2000-2017); advisor to director general, ICMR, New Delhi (2017-18); and as a professor in mathematical demography and statistics at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. He also served as chair/member on various technical advisory committees/groups at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, including: the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), the District Level Household Survey (DLHS), the Annual Health Survey (AHS) etc. and was nodal person for the estimation of HIV burden in India and its states at NACO for more than 15 years. With the help of Department of Science and technology (DST), the WHO and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Pandey established the Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI).

Prof. Pandey’s research interests include survey methodology, population dynamics, reproductive and child health, epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and clinical trials. He has authored over 225 peer-reviewed articles, 12 books and over 40 research monographs/reports. More than 18 students have been awarded a Ph.D. under his supervision.

He has several honours and fellowships, including: Young Scientist Award of the Indian Science Congress Association, Fellow of the National Academy Medical Sciences (FAMS); Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (FRSS); Fellow of the Indian Society for Medical Statistics (FSMS); and Fellow of the Indian Society for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation.

Prof. Pandey served as the president of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) from 2006 to 2010, the Indian Society for Medical Statistics (ISMS) from 2008 to 10 and chief editor of Demography India (Journal of IASP) from 2002 to 2006. He has delivered prestigious Prof. Ramakumar Memorial Oration (2011) of University of Kerala, Prof. George Simmons Memorial Oration (2012) of IASP, and Prof. S.K. Bhattacharya Oration (2014) of ISMS.
