This article highlights the opportunities, the risks and governance dynamics in the use of AI in food and agriculture systems in sub-Saharan Africa. While AI presents great potential in improving food security while contributing to Africa’s GDP, the achievement of this is not feasible without policies that address key gaps like data governance, inequality and access barriers, GESI disparities, Environmental costs and ethical concerns, and power asymmetries in AI governance.
Our proposed solutions include, focus on quality of AI data, GESI responsive AI initiatives, sustainable and equitable business models, digital literacy and access, and stronger AI governance and ethical standards at global and local levels. By fostering inclusive and responsible AI ecosystems, SSA can create a resilient, tech-driven agricultural sector that empowers smallholder farmers and ensures long-term food security for the continent.
